Function and use:

the flame from travelling backwards towards the gas line (flashback),
gases from flowing back in the reverse direction towards the gas source.
In flame welding, gas or flame flashback can be dangerous: this valve helps stop such backflow when installed directly on the handle in combination with the flexible hose.

They are designed in compliance with European standard EN 730-1 on the safety of flame welding systems, with particular reference to Flame Back Arrestor devices (preventing flame and gas flashback).
